I believe we are all capable of being profoundly, beautifully creative, whether we use that creativity to relate to family or to paint a picture.  The seeds of much of our creativity come from the unconscious, our feelings, and our intuition.
-Natalie Rogers

Why Creative Therapy?

Creative and expressive therapy can offer another way for adults, children and young people to access their deeper, unconscious parts of self, offering self-discovery and emotional healing.

While I had always considered myself a creative person, it wasn't until we were in the COVID lockdowns that I discovered the usefulness of processing emotion through drawing, painting, moving and dancing.  I would often find myself doing silly walks, moving my body in ways I didn't understand to help me shake out emotion, or journalling creatively.

Intuitively, I had integrated practices that I did not realise were what person-centered creative and expressive therapeutic practices are built on (search up Natalie Rogers and Liesl Silverstone if curious).

Integrating creative expression into your personal wellness or mental health practice offers a transformative approach to emotional healing and self-discovery.  By shifting the focus from verbal conversation to active creation, expressive arts therapy creates dynamic pathways for personal growth.

Core Benefits of Creative Expression

  • Bypasses Verbal Limitations: Non-verbal modalities—such as painting, movement, sound, and intuitive writing—allow individuals to surface complex emotions and unconscious feelings that are often difficult to articulate with words alone.

  • Transforms Emotion into Insight: Channelling intense feelings into creative projects turns raw energy into constructive, tangible forms.  This process helps release tension and fosters a deeper acceptance of all emotional states.

  • Fosters Holistic Healing: Moving through different artistic mediums—engaging the body, visual imagination, and written reflection in sequence—stimulates holistic integration across mind, body, and spirit.

  • Prioritises Process Over Product: The goal is personal discovery rather than artistic perfection or technical skill.  Removing the pressure to create "fine art" frees individuals to play, experiment, and reconnect with their inherent inner wisdom.

  • Deepens Self-Compassion: Expressing inner experiences in a supportive, judgment-free environment encourages self-acceptance, building confidence and empowering self-direction.
